Dead fledgling
Photos from Encinitas, California. Sadly my girlfriend Paula and I came across this cities cruel and
inefficient way of eradicating nesting pigeons. Their only crime was defecating on a busy highway
paved road. They have lived and nested under this railway bridge for many years. The city decides
to paint the bridge and install a huge net underneath it to keep out the birds. They do this at a high
time of nesting for the pigeons. In the meantime the adults are trapped inside and cannot feed their
young, and the other adults are in essence trapped outside trying to get in to feed their young. You
can imagine the frenzy on both sides of this netting. Babies were falling from their nests to the
netting and left to die there. A very sad state of affairs where birds were treated in a horrible and
inhumane way.
We and many others have contacted the city and the press and are working to make sure this
NEVER happens again. At last word the city has agreed to check on the birds every day to "relocate"
the adults who are still trapped inside. Although it's too late for many, perhaps the city of Encinitas
will think twice when innocent lives are a stake.
